Brakes: the job regen makes essential

Regenerative braking does most of the slowing, so the friction brakes corrode from disuse rather than wearing out.

Regenerative braking does most of the slowing on a Leaf, so the friction brakes are barely used, and that's the problem. Discs and calipers corrode and seize from lack of use, pads stick, and handbrake mechanisms bind. On ZE1 cars driven with e-Pedal the brakes get used even less, so it happens sooner.

A WOF will pick this up, and seized rear brakes are the number one item a Leaf fails on. Often the fix is a proper brake service, clean, free off, lubricate, machine or replace, rather than new parts. It is the most valuable job on the car and the reason the service interval is worth keeping to.

We also sort spongy pedals and the ABS and brake-actuator faults the Leaf is known for, and brake fluid gets replaced on the same schedule as any car, every 2 years or 40,000 km, because it absorbs water whether you use the brakes or not.

Squeaky brakes? A common complaint for EV owners but normally easily sorted by our team. Book in for a disc skim and pad de-glaze.

If the car is due a WOF as well, we can do both in one visit and quote anything we find before touching it.

Frequently asked

Does regenerative braking wear out the brakes?

It is the opposite problem. Regen and e-Pedal barely use the friction brakes, so they corrode from disuse rather than wear out. Stripping, cleaning and lubricating them matters more on a Leaf than on a petrol equivalent.

Why do Nissan Leaf rear brakes seize?

The rear calipers and slide pins get almost no use, so corrosion builds up and the pads stick. It is the most common Leaf WOF failure.

Do I need new brake parts or just a service?

Usually a service. Clean, free off, lubricate, then machine or replace only what is actually worn. We quote before we start.
