Servicing: no engine oil change, plenty still to do

The Leaf has no engine oil to change, but it is not maintenance-free. We tell you what is due now and what can wait.

The Leaf has no engine oil to change, no cambelt and no exhaust, which is why a general workshop can struggle to know what to charge for. There is still a list, and most of it is the sort of work that quietly gets skipped. On a normal service visit we:

  • Replace brake fluid (it absorbs water on the same schedule as any car, every 2 years / 40,000 km)
  • Change the cabin / pollen filter and check the AC
  • Change the reduction-gear oil on higher-km cars, because the Leaf's single-speed "gearbox" still runs in oil. Recommended every 60,000 km; unsure if yours has been done? Book in with the team today
  • Check and top up battery and inverter coolant on 40 kWh and 62 kWh (ZE1) cars
  • Rotate tyres, check wear and pressures, and inspect brakes, suspension and steering
  • Road-test and scan for stored fault codes
  • Read the high-voltage battery state of health and note it on your invoice

The brakes are the reason the interval matters. Regen does most of the slowing, so the friction brakes corrode from disuse rather than wearing out, and that is a WOF failure as well as a repair bill. Stripping, cleaning and lubricating them is part of the visit, not an extra.

We will tell you what is due now and what can wait, and we won't sell you work the car doesn't need. A battery health check is included free with a full service, and we can do the WOF in the same visit.

Frequently asked

How often should a Nissan Leaf be serviced?

Recommended service intervals are 12 months or 15,000 km, whichever comes first. The brakes are the reason: with regen and e-Pedal doing most of the slowing, the calipers and slide pins corrode and stick if they are left alone.

Does a Leaf really need servicing if there is no oil change?

Yes. Brake fluid, cabin filter, reduction gear oil, coolant on ZE1 cars, tyres, suspension and a proper brake service all still apply, and on an import several of them have often never been done.

Can a general workshop service a Leaf?

They can do the tyres, the brakes and the WOF. What they usually cannot do is read the pack properly, so the jobs that actually matter, cell-pair balance and stored EV fault codes, get skipped.
