Tyres and alignment: weight plus instant torque
The pack makes a Leaf heavier than a petrol car its size, and the motor delivers everything from a standstill.
Instant torque and extra weight from the battery wear tyres faster than owners expect, and a Leaf out of alignment scrubs its inside edges quickly. One shoulder can be gone while the rest of the tread still looks fine.
Imports arrive with alignment set for another country's roads, and Auckland kerbs and potholes do the rest. That is why we check wear pattern, pressures and alignment at every service: a wear pattern read early is a tyre saved rather than a set of tyres and a WOF fail.
We fit EV-rated tyres, balance and align in-house on our own gear, and can quote low-rolling-resistance options that claw back a little range. If the wear is uneven rather than even, we look at suspension and bushes before selling you rubber, because a heavy floor works those parts hard and worn components will chew a new set just as fast.
Frequently asked
Why do Nissan Leaf tyres wear out so fast?
Weight and torque. The pack makes a Leaf heavier than a petrol car its size and the motor delivers full torque from a standstill. Add alignment that is out, which is common on an import, and tyres go quickly.
Do I need EV-specific tyres on a Leaf?
We fit EV-rated tyres and can quote low-rolling-resistance options that claw back a little range. The main thing is the right load rating and correct alignment.
Can you align a Leaf in-house?
Yes, balancing and alignment are done here on our own gear, so tyres, alignment and a WOF can happen in one visit.
